A inteligência artificial entrou assim na nossa vida — sem cerimónia, como entram o cansaço ou o amor. E talvez seja isso que mais desconcerta: não o que ela promete fazer, mas aquilo que já mudou sem termos notado. Penso muitas vezes naquela imagem clássica da evolução humana, a sequência de figuras que se vão levantando do chão. E percebo que essa fila nunca terminou. Só que agora há uma diferença: a próxima figura não vem atrás de nós. Caminha ao nosso lado. E, sem perceber bem quando, demos-lhe a mão.Artificial intelligence entered our lives like that — without ceremony, the way tiredness enters, or love. And perhaps that is what unsettles us most: not what it promises to do, but what it has already changed without our noticing. I often think of that classic image of human evolution, the sequence of figures rising from the ground. And I realise that line never ended. Only now there is a difference: the next figure does not come behind us. It walks beside us. And, without quite noticing when, we took its hand.

Não acredito na resistência pura. Resistir ao que já faz parte de nós é como tentar discutir conosco próprios. Mas também não acredito em rendição. Entre esses dois extremos, há um caminho mais exigente — e mais humano: a integração consciente. Saber que a ferramenta nos transforma enquanto a usamos, e escolher, todos os dias, o que queremos amplificar em nós. A simbiose não é o fim do humano. É apenas a sua próxima forma — como já foram o fogo, a escrita, a imprensa. Penso muitas vezes no impacto que a máquina a vapor e a revolução industrial tiveram numa sociedade ainda manual, no século XIX — e suspeito que estamos perante uma rutura de escala semelhante.I do not believe in pure resistance. Resisting what is already part of us is like arguing with ourselves. But I do not believe in surrender either. Between these two extremes lies a harder, more human path: conscious integration. Knowing that the tool transforms us as we use it, and choosing, every day, what we want to amplify in ourselves. Symbiosis is not the end of the human. It is simply its next form — as fire was, as writing was, as the printing press was. I often think of the impact the steam engine and the industrial revolution had on a still-manual society, in the nineteenth century — and I suspect we are facing a rupture of similar scale.

Falo disto porque passei por isso. Durante meses, consultei o meu "livrinho de ideias e projetos", e construí um livro com uma IA ao meu lado. Frase a frase, dúvida a dúvida. Até que houve um momento — numa noite qualquer — em que deixei de conseguir distinguir onde acabava a minha ideia e começava a dela. E, em vez de medo, senti alívio. Porque o resultado era melhor do que qualquer um de nós sozinho. Foi aí que entendi: a máquina não me substituiu o pensamento. Obrigou-me a pensar melhor, como um espelho exigente que não deixa passar a preguiça. Continuo a falhar, a apagar páginas inteiras pela madrugada. Mas até os erros parecem mais vivos, mais interativos — oportunidades de acrescentar, não de desistir.I speak of this because I have lived it. For months, I consulted my "little notebook of ideas and projects", and built a book with an AI beside me. Sentence by sentence, doubt by doubt. Until there was a moment — some night or other — when I could no longer tell where my idea ended and hers began. And, instead of fear, I felt relief. Because the result was better than either of us alone. That is when I understood: the machine did not replace my thinking. It forced me to think better, like a demanding mirror that lets no laziness through. I still fail, still erase entire pages deep into the night. But even the mistakes feel more alive, more interactive — opportunities to add, not to give up.

Sobre o futuro, só tenho humildade. Não sei o que vem. Sei que vem depressa, e que quem esperar por certezas vai recebê-las já em forma de passado. Por isso, escolhi explorar. Escrevo, desenho jogos onde humanos e sistemas se enfrentam à mesma mesa, experimento ideias que falham mais vezes do que resultam. Cada falha é um mapa. Foi desse percurso que nasceu um ebook — não como resposta definitiva, mas como registo de alguém que avançou alguns passos e voltou para partilhar o que viu, numa ferramenta entre várias que explorei.About the future, I have only humility. I do not know what comes. I know it comes fast, and that those who wait for certainties will receive them already in the shape of the past. So I chose to explore. I write, I design games where humans and systems face each other across the same table, I experiment with ideas that fail more often than they succeed. Each failure is a map. From this journey a book was born — not as a definitive answer, but as the record of someone who walked a few steps ahead and came back to share what he saw, using one tool among several he explored.

E é este o convite, feito em voz baixa: não tenhas pressa de ter opinião sobre a IA. Tem antes a coragem de a experimentar com as tuas próprias mãos, as mesmas que tremem, que se cansam, que às vezes não sabem o que fazem. Porque a fila da evolução continua a andar, contigo ou sem ti — mas há uma diferença imensa entre ser arrastado pelo futuro e caminhar para ele de olhos abertos, levando contigo tudo o que a máquina nunca terá: o medo, a ternura, a dúvida. É com isso, precisamente com isso, que se constrói o que vem a seguir.And this is the invitation, spoken quietly: do not rush to have an opinion about AI. Instead, have the courage to try it with your own hands — the same hands that tremble, that tire, that sometimes do not know what they are doing. Because the line of evolution keeps moving, with or without you — but there is an immense difference between being dragged into the future and walking towards it with open eyes, carrying everything the machine will never have: fear, tenderness, doubt. It is with that — precisely with that — that what comes next is built.
